Achieving New Year’s Resolutions

With 2023 starting many people will create New Year’s resolutions. Here’s some ways to celebrate the end of 2022. Notoriously New Year’s resolutions are forgotten almost faster than they were created. Here are some tips for achieving New Year’s resolutions.

One reason for New Year’s resolutions are not achieved is the lack of structure to introduce a new aspiration into your life. What could assist you on delivering your New Year’s resolutions is 5 elements of structure.

Let me know your New Year’s resolutions for 2023.

Scale - What size is it? Is a big New Year's resolution going to be achieved?

I’ve been thinking about structure from a design and lifestyle perspective. I’ve found the word stems from the Latin word  structura which means “a fitting together, building.””[1].

Structure is a remarkably fluid word. It can be applied to so many facets of life. These images show that both natural and man-made structures have elegance. The materials used give another dimension, the texture, the sheen. All the unique elements combine to create a beautiful structure. All so varied, but all equally effective and impressive.

Structure can also be the key to beginning a new project or behaviour. Structures that work for some of us are not going to work for others.

5 Elements of Structure

Here are five elements that form the foundation of structures.

  • Substance – what they are made from?
  • Scale – the size, big or small
  • Suitability – fit for purpose – Will it work?
  • Simplicity – does it have clean lines and look elegant? Or is it fussy and cluttered?
  • Sustainability – is it a one off? Or can it be replicated?

Each and every structure has its own combination of these elements.

Achieving New Year’s Resolutions with 5 Elements of Structure

Here are the same five elements to support you deliver on your New Year’s resolutions.

  • Substance – Why do you want to achieve this? Why is it important to you? Understanding this gives you resolve to keep going.
  • Scale – Is your resolution small or big? Is it big enough to inspire you? Is it big enough to inspire others? Bigger goals often have more success as you inspire a community & support each other. Your resolution becomes more than being just about you.
  • Suitability – Is it realistic? Is it the right time? Do you have the right skills?
  • Simplicity –Adopting a simple practice can make your new task easier. It’s always best not to overcomplicate things. Small changes practiced daily are going to have more impact over time than fits and burst of activity every few months.
  • Sustainability – To keep a goal alive the expectations on delivering it need to be realistic and manageable.
